After three consecutive seasons of finishing as runners-up, the Delhi Capitals enter the 2026 Women’s Premier League season with a different leader and a much stronger side. For three years, they were the most consistent team in the league phase, topping the table every single time, but always failed to win the final.

The New Captain: Jemimah Rodrigues

The biggest story out of the Delhi camp is the departure of the legendary Meg Lanning. After leading the side since the first season, Lanning has moved on to the UP Warriorz after DC released her and named Jemimah Rodrigues as their captain.

Jemimah has been appointed the new captain, and she has been in great form since last year. Her unbeaten knock in the semi-final against Australia was her best performance last year. Jemimah isn’t just a tactical leader but also someone who brings positive energy to the team.

Rebuilding the Core

While letting go of Lanning was a tough decision, Delhi’s auction strategy was focused on creating a more versatile core. They retained their high-impact Indian stars, Shafali Verma and Jemimah herself, along with the world-class all-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland. However, Sutherland opted out of the season, and the Capitals brought in Australian leg-spinner Alana King as a replacement.

They strengthened the top order with the purchase of South African captain Laura Wolvaardt for ₹1.10 crore. This is a masterstroke. Wolvaardt brings the same “anchor” quality that Lanning provided, but with a modern T20 flavour. Pairing her with the power of Shafali Verma creates a balanced opening duo.

Backing the Domestic Names

DC brought in experienced Indian spinner Sneh Rana, who provides a cool head in the middle overs and can hit crucial lower-order runs. They have also invested heavily in N Sree Charani, a left-arm spinner who has been making waves on the international circuit. The retention of Niki Prasad already gave signs that DC will back domestic names this season.

The addition of Chinelle Henry, the West Indian all-rounder, gives them a “finisher” option. If Kapp or Jemimah provide the platform, Henry has the power to ensure Delhi finishes strongly in the death overs.

The Final Hurdle

For the coaches, the challenge isn’t about getting to the playoffs, because Delhi has proven they can always do that. The challenge is the “Grand Finale.” With a younger team, leadership under Jemimah, and a bowling attack that now features a variety of spin (Alana King, Sneh Rana, Sree Charani) and elite pace (Marizanne Kapp), the Capitals look more adaptable to different pitch conditions than ever before.

They open their campaign on January 10 against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians. It is a repeat of the 2023 and 2025 finals, and there would be no better way for Jemimah’s “New Delhi” to signal their intent than by taking down the champions on opening night.
